Dar es Salaam city has modern transportation networks that
make it easy to get from one place to another. There are several means of
transport in Dar es Salaam which can deliver a good service with reasonable price. The most common form of transport in
Dar es Salaam are the public buses, called dala dala, which are often found at the major
bus terminals of Makumbusho and Ubungo. Since the introduction of motorcycle transit business
known as "Bodaboda", most of the people prefer this type of
transportation which allows them to get into the city faster
compared to the minibuses which face a lot of traffic. Other types of transport
include motorcycles and Bajaj.
DALLA-DALLAS
Dalla-dallas (minibuses and 30-seater buses) have long been the mainstay of Dar's public transport system, servicing many city destinations for an average price of Tsh400-600 per ride. They are invariably packed to overflowing, and are difficult to board with luggage. First and last stops are shown in the front window, but routes vary, so confirm with the conductor that the driver is going to your destination.
DAR
RAPID TRANSIT (MWENDOKASI)
The government has been introducing
a bus rapid transport or metro bus system under the Dar
es Salaam bus rapid transit meaning
'mwendo kasi' in Kiswahili. The metro buses are managed by UDA (Usafiri Dar es Salaam).
The Dar Rapid Transit (DART) project in Dar es Salaam is
gradually taking over old dalla-dalla routes. The Kimara–Kivukoni line of the
new system runs express buses between the city center and Ubungo (Tsh650, about
20 minutes), stopping en route at both Ubungo Bus Terminal and
Ubungo-Sheikilango, and in the city center at Kisutu St, Old Posta Transport Stand and Kivukoni.
BAJAJ
Dar es Salaam relies on tuk-tuk taxis: three-wheeled carts that zip in and out of traffic. Anxious visitors may be hesitant to step into one of these contraptions, but those with a taste for adventure will find them fun. And their prices are not costful traveling from one place to another.
MOTORCYCLE (BODA BODA)
Motorcycle taxis is commonly found in Dar es saalam. Boda bodas provide transportation options to riders and job opportunities to drivers. Boda Boda is the fastest means of transport you can reach your destination on time but its most dangerous because of many accidents reported are caused by bodaboda. This kind of transport has no fixed amount of money to pay the rider but it may sometimes cost 1.5 $ per trip of 1 km. Boda Boda transport is most preferable to those people who have hurry to escape the traffic jam.
PONTOON
This is also one of the kinds of transport used on
the way to Kigamboni and it cost 200/= TSH per trip. The pontoons run between
south east Kivukoni to North West Kigamboni in south east Dar es salaam during
the day time.
MV Kigamboni ferries are running
between south east of Kivukoni and North West of Kigamboni in Dar es Salaam.
