ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT LOCAL TRANSPORT IN DAR ES SALAAM:

Dar es Salaam city has modern transportation networks that make it easy to get from one place to another. There are several means of transport in Dar es Salaam which can deliver a good service with reasonable price. The most common form of transport in Dar es Salaam are the public buses, called dala dala, which are often found at the major bus terminals of Makumbusho and Ubungo. Since the introduction of motorcycle transit business known as "Bodaboda", most of the people prefer this type of transportation which allows them to get into the city faster compared to the minibuses which face a lot of traffic. Other types of transport include motorcycles and Bajaj.

DALLA-DALLAS

Dalla-dallas (minibuses and 30-seater buses) have long been the mainstay of Dar's public transport system, servicing many city destinations for an average price of Tsh400-600 per ride. They are invariably packed to overflowing, and are difficult to board with luggage. First and last stops are shown in the front window, but routes vary, so confirm with the conductor that the driver is going to your destination.

DAR RAPID TRANSIT (MWENDOKASI)

The government has been introducing a bus rapid transport or metro bus system under the Dar es Salaam bus rapid transit meaning 'mwendo kasi' in Kiswahili. The metro buses are managed by UDA (Usafiri Dar es Salaam).
The Dar Rapid Transit (DART) project in Dar es Salaam is gradually taking over old dalla-dalla routes. The Kimara–Kivukoni line of the new system runs express buses between the city center and Ubungo (Tsh650, about 20 minutes), stopping en route at both Ubungo Bus Terminal and Ubungo-Sheikilango, and in the city center at Kisutu St, Old Posta Transport Stand and Kivukoni.

BAJAJ

Dar es Salaam relies on tuk-tuk taxis: three-wheeled carts that zip in and out of traffic. Anxious visitors may be hesitant to step into one of these contraptions, but those with a taste for adventure will find them fun. And their prices are not costful traveling from one place to another.

MOTORCYCLE (BODA BODA)

Motorcycle taxis is commonly found in Dar es saalam. Boda bodas provide transportation options to riders and job opportunities to drivers. Boda Boda is the fastest means of transport you can reach your destination on time but its most dangerous because of many accidents reported are caused by bodaboda. This kind of transport has no fixed amount of money to pay the rider but it may sometimes cost 1.5 $ per trip of 1 km. Boda Boda transport is most preferable to those people who have hurry to escape the traffic jam.

PONTOON

This is also one of the kinds of transport used on the way to Kigamboni and it cost 200/= TSH per trip. The pontoons run between south east Kivukoni to North West Kigamboni in south east Dar es salaam during the day time.
MV Kigamboni ferries are running between south east of Kivukoni and North West of Kigamboni in Dar es Salaam.

Railway

The Dar es Salaam commuter rail, informally known as” Treni ya Mwakyembe” is an urban and suburban commuter rail network serving the Tanzanian commercial city of Dar es Salaam. It is one of the two initiatives taken by the government to ease travel within the congested city.

ONE OF THE INTERESTING HISTORY ABOUT DAR ES SALAAM

ONE  OF THE INTERESTING HISTORY ABOUT DAR ES SALAAM

Dar es Salaam was  originally a small village named Mzizima meaning “healthy town” in Swahili dating back to 1857. Regional origin tribes were Zaramo with ethnic small such as as ndengereko and kwere .
Historic began since the last 1000 years when the site was for plantations such as cassava, millet and maize. In 1866 Sultan Seyyed Majid of Zanzibar gave the name of which is now used in the Arabic word for "Peace of Heaven".

Dar es Salaam collapsed but rose again after the German East African Company established a business center in 1887 and eliminated the Arab regime even dominating the East African coast. German colonial presence in east Africa grew and Dar es Salaam became the administrative and commercial center of the colony. In 1900 it became the eastern terminus of the Central Railway Line that ran into the interior of German East Africa.

During the First World War the Germans in East Africa were destroyed by the British and since then it was known as Tanganyika. After the Second World War, Dar es Salaam was promptly established by TANU (Tanganyika African National Union) which led to Tanganyika's independence on 9 December 1961.Dar es Salaam grew rapidly after World War II and soon became the center of anti-colonial agitation led by the Tanganyika African National Union (TANU) founded in the city.  When Tanganyika became independent in 1961, Dar es Salaam became its first capital, a position it continued to have when Tanganyika and Zanzibar merged in 1964 to become Tanzania.
Dar es Salam is among the fastest growing cities in the world .It is about 1,800 km² with 8 islands and marine area between the beach and the islands. Only dry land area is 1,393 km².

The National Museum, the Village Museum, and many colorful markets are well worth a visit. Numerous historical landmarks, including St. Joseph’s Cathedral, the White Father’s Mission House, the Botanical Gardens, and the old State House make for an interesting walking tour around the waterfront and city Centre.
Seven kilometers north of the city, is Bongoyo Island Marine Reserve which offers good snorkeling and diving sites for those who want to explore the water. The reserve boasts of its beautiful beaches, secluded islands and many varieties of marine species. Although the variety and population of coral and fish species are not as numerous as other sites on Zanzibar, Pemba, and Mafia Island, the Bongoyo Island Marine Reserve is well worth a visit and is a great way to spend a day out and see the coast.
